Market Street project in San Francisco for Bethany United Methodist Church(award winning project)*
The photo's below were taken of a garden located in San Francisco. The "tri" intersections of Noe
Street, 16th Streets at Market on the grounds of once stood, a church. The church was here for almost 100 years
until 1982 when arson destroyed the building and all it's beauty. The lot had been vacant for those years with
the exception of small gardens that did not last but for a short period. I was commissioned to do this project
in late 2001, by former board member Dennis Parks who was excited that my vision
could help transform this eye sore of a corner into something that would make people stop and look with excitement!
You can see from the before and after pictures that the site was extremely challenging
do to location, the dynamics of moving materials into the site from a busy street level.Coordinating deliveries
without causing to much traffic slow downs was one point needing to be looked at for all things, including safety.
It shows that even the most difficult of sites, can be transformed into gardens of beauty! Another big challenge of the site was working with the existing back wall of wood sheets and concrete. You view
this primarily from the16th street location, to help it work with the "look", the use of paint transformed
the wall into what appears to be blocks, and a tunnel, lending a feel to the columns that makes it look like another
place!. Especially when your down in the garden below street level, you loose some sense of where you are as noise
is reduced and adds to it's overall serenity.
The following four photo's show the site before construction began.
As progress continues for the new garden! 50 yards of topsoil, 3 tons of drain rock for the French drain along
the wall to remove winter rain.
Lavender adorns the walk with roses on each side embracing the slope.
This photo was
taken about one year past installation, the plantings on this site are really filling in nicely, the color is showing
more and more
The back wall looking like you could pass through to the other side of the wall
The garden burst with color throughout the spring and summer seasons giving a warm and welcoming feel to enter
this wonderful space. The columns I felt were very important as they gave height to a space that was very empty
when you stood in the lower or grassy section. They also added a feel as if reaching up towards the sky, or resurrecting
from the ashes that once took this church.
The city is busy at night, especially is this area and wanted to make sure that the garden did not get lost
in darkness. The addition of "up" lighting along with lights in the bowls would bring it to life! The
photo's below of the columns were taken at night of the garden. The plants in the bowls illuminate at night to
look like FIRE!!

Garden ornaments and art is a spectacular part of setting a distinctive style. As you can see with the columns they embellish the look to the garden. The addition of lighting adds life to the garden so it's viewed and enjoyed during the evening hours!
Garden lighting is truly important as I find it wonderful for those times that you want to enjoy the garden during evening hours, or for special occasions and parties!
